Basil
Basil is excellent for soothing a chest cold with a spasmodic cough. It is a very effective antispasmodic, and can stop coughing for several hours after each application to the chest. I also like to rub a cream with sweet Basil on my neck to get rid of a headache. It can be used on its own or blended with Lavender. It seems to work best if the headache is stress or tension related. It is also a good digestive aid and can be added to a blend for gas or cramping after eating. Basil is also used for muscle pains and cramping.

It is a powerful antispasmodic and can be effective in reducing and eliminating abdominal cramps and spastic coughing. Bergamot is also an effective aid for digestion. Great for restless leg syndrome. Bergamot offers an emotionally uplifting effect to combat stress and depression and is calming for the nervous system. It is one of the most valuable oils I have used to support emotional health and well-being. It is also used to inhibit the herpes viruses. Try using it in a diffuser, especially for depression, as it offers a light, uplifting and lovely aroma to the room.

Cardamom belongs to the same family as Ginger and they are both warming oils. In India, Cardamom has been used for centuries as a digestive aid. I have used it on my clients in the suggested cream recipe to relieve gas, nausea, heartburn and diarrhea. It is a wonderful oil for aiding mental concentration (cephalic). Cinnamon
Cinnamon is like a warm wrap that softens nasty side effects of a cold-shivering and painful joints. It could help warm older people who tend to chill easily during cold winter months or others who are physically weak or recuperating from illness. Similar effects may be noted for psychological symptoms, like emotional coldness, isolations, tension and fear. Cinnamon arouses physical senses and creativity. It strengthens the heart and nervous system. This oil has strong antiseptic and stringent properties. Cinnamon may also be used for diarrhea, flatulence, and stomach or intestinal cramps. Applied externally, cinnamon helps warm and stimulate the circulatory system and may be used to relax tense muscles and aid women with weak or painful menstruations. Research at the Wheeling Jesuit University in the US has proved that the scent of cinnamon has the ability to boost brain activity. The team of researchers led by Dr. P. Zoladz, found that people who were administered with cinnamon improved their score on cognitive activities such as attention processes, virtual recognition memory, working memory, and visual-motor response speed.

Cypress
Cypress is astringent and therefore useful for areas of excess fluid. Try adding it to skin care blends for oily skin; it is great to use with a clay mask. It can be great for stopping sweaty feet! I have had great results using Cypress to relieve the swelling and pain of varicose veins, especially with a little Lemon oil added to the blend. When spasmodic coughing is the concern, smelling a few drops of the oil on a tissue can calm the lungs and can also stop an asthma attack in the beginning stages. Eucalyptus
Eucalyptus has many uses in massage as well. Try adding it to a blend for clients who have sore muscles, for pain relief. I regularly use the Decongestant Steam Blend recipe for a few days, 2-3 times a day, wait a week or so and then use it again. I consider this an effective way to prevent a cold or flu. If I have been around people who are sick I will do a steam that night. I also diffuse this blend in the house as a preventative measure. If you can't find time or energy to do a steam, put a drop on a tissue and smell the strong, fresh aroma for a few minutes. If people are sick at work try putting a few drops on a tissue and leaving it on your desk! You can also make a room spray. Most respiratory conditions can benefit dramatically from the use of eucalyptus oil. You can add it to a cream, oil, diffuser, shampoo, liquid soap, tissue, foot soak or bath. (For the foot soak or bath, dilute well in a carrier oil first at 1-2%).

Fennel
Fennel has a herby, slightly spicy smell, much like aniseed and it is clear in viscosity. This essential oil is used in aromatherapy to boost your courage, resolve and strength in the face of adversity, while helping a huge array of digestive problems, fighting obesity, clearing an oily skin and fighting wrinkles. Fennel oil is a remedy for digestive complaints such as flatulence, constipation, colic, nausea, vomiting, anorexia, dyspepsia and hiccups. It is also used in cases of obesity, as it promotes that 'full feeling' and has a diuretic effect that helps to disperse cellulite. It has a cleansing and toning effect on the skin, helping with bruises, sorting out overly oily skin and to fight wrinkles in more mature complexions (possibly due to the estrogenic properties of the oil). It has a toning effect on the spleen and liver, that helps with the results of excess drink and food. It is also used for increasing insufficient milk in nursing mothers - but for boosting breast milk, rather use the fresh herb, since the oil contains very high concentrations of trans-anethole.

Frankincense
Frankincense has classically been used as incense and to deepen meditation. I often add Frankincense to skin care products for dry, aging skin and to reduce scar tissue. It blends well with Rose and Lavender for skin care blends. I have found that people who suffer from asthma or ongoing respiratory conditions can benefit from using Frankincense on a regular basis in many forms: in oil or cream on their chest, as an addition to shampoo, inhaled from a tissue or a diffuser, or in a bath or foot soak. Frankincense is excellent for headaches and tension in the neck muscles. Use for any muscle pain or trauma. The oil has a resinous, rich aroma. Geramium
Geranium has a lovely aroma for diffusing in the air in small quantities. The floral, rosy scent is uplifting and fresh. This species of Geranium emphasizes the more earthy, woodsy tones of the oil. Geranium has a stimulating effect on the lymphatic system. I like to use it with women who are bloated prior to or during their menstrual cycle. It can be very useful in reducing edema and fluid retention through its regulating action. For swollen ankles Geranium can be used in a bath, blended into a cream or oil, or added to a cool foot soak. Try adding a bit of Grapefruit to the Geranium to enhance the therapeutic effects. Try adding one drop to a small handful of shampoo before washing your hair. It is known to balance the production of sebum and is used for hair or skin that has excess oil or excess dryness. It can also bring health to skin and hair that is oily with dry patches or dry with oily patches. Geranium’s regulating action can help with PMS, mood swings, and balancing the menstrual cycle. It is also used to inhibit the herpes viruses.

Ginger
Ginger is used in any condition where the body is not dealing well with internal or external moisture. Diarrhea and excess mucus are examples of an inability to deal with internal moisture. Rheumatism, along with many other winter health concerns, is aggravated by external damp conditions. The warming properties of Ginger are called for in these situations.
Try adding a few drops of Ginger to your blends in the winter. It offers that spicy, warming, soothing sensation that is so needed at this time of year. Ginger stimulates more circulation to the areas on which it is used. Its antispasmodic properties bring relaxation and calming to an otherwise contracted situation. When the stress of contraction is relieved, the opportunity for healing arises.
Good for nausea caused by traveling, pregnancy, and chemotherapy.

Grapefruit is often used for its wonderful diuretic and astringent properties; I love Grapefruit most for its sparkling aroma. The scent adds such sunshine to whatever space it is diffusing in. Apply to anything that is swollen - on ankles or joints - blend in a lotion and apply right on the area. Great for making a room spray or adding to dried flowers in a bowl. Use freely in a diffuser. Sometimes I will add other citrus oils like Lime and Orange for a more expansive scent. The smell brings freshness and is a great choice any time of year. Grapefruit is a great deodorizer.

Jasmine is commonly used for its delicious, floral, exotic fragrance! Juniper Berry
Juniper Berry has detoxifying effects that are outstanding. You can use the oil frequently in massage oils and baths. If you are an athlete or have done some extensive physical activity, a Juniper Berry bath with sea salts is just the thing. Juniper Berry is also used widely for edema, lymph congestion, bloating, varicose veins, and fluid retention. Juniper Berry is used for treating acne with good results. It is very good astringent, and due to its antiseptic qualities it will help cleanse and heal the infected areas. You can also put it in homemade cleaning products along with Pine and Lemon. It is great for bathrooms, floors, and kitchens and as you clean you actually increase your immune system's health, unlike when using chemical cleaners that are toxic to your system.

Lavendar
Lavendar has an outstanding balancing and healing effect on the nervous system. Considering that so many illnesses are stress related, Lavender holds a special place in both preventative health care and in the treatment of tension-related illnesses. It offers a soothing and antispasmodic effect that can assist tight muscles, digestive problems, spasmodic coughs, menstrual cramps, insomnia, and tension headaches. Great for restless leg syndrome. Lavender's anti-inflammatory, skin-healing properties will help heal burns, bug bites, wounds, bee stings, rashes, acne, and skin irritations or infections. Use a few drops of Lavender in any blend for reducing emotional tension, unwinding physical pain, and for any sudden skin problems. Lavender oil improves sleep quality.

Lemongrass
Lemongrass is especially known for its analgesic and antifungal properties. Lemongrass is also considered a powerful analgesic and is used to assist the healing of any injury to muscle, tendon, ligament, and bone. It is cooling and lovely to use in a blend for hot and inflamed situations. Add just a few drops to my blend for a refreshing, emotionally uplifting and cooling effect. It has a dry, citrus aroma that is stimulating and refreshing. Lemongrass is outstanding in a blend for dealing with fungus. When blending with lemongrass it is useful to add a skin nourishing oil to the blend such as Sandalwood or Patchouli (which also help care for the area of fungus) to neutralize the potentially skin irritating effects of the Lemongrass.

Myrrh
Myrrh is one of the oldest essential oils known, dating back almost 4,000 years, used by the ancient Egyptians. Today it is also known for its use in religious ceremonies, skin healing, and protection against wrinkles. Excellent to use for bedsores, wounds, and hemorrhoids. It has a warm, resinous, unique aroma. I have used Myrrh for many kinds of skin issue: athlete’s foot, slow healing wounds or fungus, eczema, and mature skin are a few examples where Myrrh has been of great assistance. It has a strong anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect. Myrrh is great to add to your respiratory blends for coughs, congestion, colds, and the flu.

Myrtle is a soft and lovely oil to use during a cold or flu to reduce tension, congestion and muscle pains. We also like using it to get rid of headaches and to help clear the mind when it feels foggy. It is a wonderful oil to add to a diffuser, bath or body lotion. Another excellent use of Myrtle is for soothing a sore throat. Blend with Sandalwood and Jojoba oil and apply to the throat. 5 drops Myrtle and 5 drops Sandalwood in 1 oz jojoba makes for a wonderful sore throat remedy. We also use it to sooth the digestion and reduce gas, cramps and an upset stomach.

Neroli
Neroli is great for people who need strong emotional support. The gentle floral, citrus aroma can be very soothing and calming to the nervous system, especially when used in really small amounts and blended with other calming oils. It is an important oil to use during times of serious shock and trauma. It can be wonderful in massage oils because people have an overwhelmingly positive response to its aroma and calming effect. Neroli is considered an antidepressant and is very helpful in reducing anxiety. Perhaps this is why it is so great in massage oils. It is a very strong oil and you only need to use a small amount. Too much (even 2 or 3 drops) can cause a headache. Neroli is widely used in skin care products, and is healing combined with other oils for most skin concerns. It is anti-infectious, especially anti-bacterial. Neroli offers immune support when ill. It is also used for heart palpitations; try combining it with Ylang Ylang.

Nutmeg
Nutmeg is most useful as a digestive tonic and stimulant. The spice is traditionally added to food to support digestion and to reduce gas after eating a heavy meal and for nausea. It can be useful for reducing diarrhea. The oil is helpful to reduce the swelling and pain in arthritis and rheumatism. I like to add it into a cream or oil (at no more then 1%-5-6 drops of Nutmeg in one ounce of carrier oil) to help reduce the pain in swollen joints and muscles.

Oregano
Oregano is considered to be the true oregano of the herb garden and is also known as Joy of the Mountain and Wild Marjoram. It is an antioxidant due to its high phenol content. Oregano has recently been found to have extremely effective properties against methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), showing a higher effectiveness than 18 currently used drugs. Oregano has a special affinity with the respiratory and digestive systems and is a good natural antiseptic due to the Thymol content. It has a warm herbaceous medicinal aroma that smells much like the aromatic herb. Oregano is a wonderful addition to our essential oil collection but must be used with care due to the phenol content.

Patchouli
Patchouli is an excellent insect repellent both applied on the body and used as incense. The oil is used as a perfume and a deodorant, and in the past was used to scent clothes and keep away moths. Research shows the oil’s antibacterial effects are strong. I have used Patchouli in blends to reduce stress, depression, and anxiety. It can also be used in blends for skin conditions such as dryness, inflammation, scars, sores, eczema and wounds. It is moisturizing and cooling for the skin. Peppermint
Peppermint in a footbath or a foot massage cream is one of the best things for tired, achy feet. It is stimulating and tingly. It has the advantage of being antifungal, anti-inflammatory, stimulating to the circulatory system, and analgesic. What more could you want for tired feet? A strong cup of the Peppermint herb tea is a great remedy for an upset stomach. The essential oil can also be used to aid digestion: you can add 2 drops to an oz. of carrier and rub it on your belly for a similar effect. Try it in a bathroom spray. It leaves the room smelling fresh. It is great to diffuse in very small amounts during the day, bringing a stimulating aroma into any room. Great in cool compresses for nausea, headaches and travel sickness. Excellent in reducing acute, hot pain. Gets rid of ants and mice! Put a drop on a cotton ball!

Rhododendron
Rhododendron grows all throughout the USA and Europe is actually native to Nepal! The plant has many traditional uses such as using the leaves and flowers to make a tea for a sore throat, a cold or to relieve a headache. The plant also has spiritual uses. The essential oil is calming and grounding. It is used in skin care and added to shampoos for healthy hair. It is wonderful to diffuse and to add to unscented lotions and bath salts. The oil is a good decongestant, and is antispasmodic for the respiratory system. It also is known to help reduce inflammation and is a nice tonic for the adrenal glands. Rose Geranium is rare combination has all the qualities of both the soft and intriguing Rose and the slightly woody and uplifting Geranium. In another words, they take part Rose Petals and Part Geranium distilling them together. Rose is known for many other therapeutic effects such as hormone balancing during menopause, cooling for hot flashes (use the mist), calming, cleansing, and purifying the reproductive system. It can also be emotionally uplifting and a tonic for the nervous system. Rose oil has always been and still is a symbol of love and beauty. Geranium is perfect for helping us to become more in touch with the creative side of our minds. For a cold, try making a cream with other respiratory oils (Eucalyptus, White Pine, Frankincense, Lavender) and put it on your chest and upper back all through the day. Sandalwood
Sandalwood has been used for centuries as incense. Its aroma has a way of quieting the mind and settling the breath. I like to put it in unscented liquid soap and in foot massage creams to experience the soothing, strengthening and grounding effects. It has a woody, balsamic, sweet aroma. One outstanding effect of Sandalwood is its affinity for the throat. If I feel a sore throat coming on, I will put a drop under my chin and on my neck and the sore throat will often clear up within a few hours. If you feel a cold coming on, use the Sandalwood, and try a few steams with Eucalyptus, Ravintsara and Pine. Then try a hot bath with Rosewood and Roman Chamomile. This ritual can prevent a cold from settling in. Sandalwood is also used as a moisturizer and antiseptic for skin concerns. You can put a bit of it on a warm cloth and use that as a compress for dry or dehydrated skin.

Vetiver
Vetiver is known to boost your immune system as you wear it! Just as you can use essential oils for cleaning rather than using toxic chemicals, you can use Vetiver (or Sandalwood, Spikenard and Patchouli) as a perfume instead of chemically-derived perfumes. I like to run my finger over the top of the bottle and put that on my wrists and neck. Be sure you do not have a sensitive reaction to it. If you tend to have sensitive skin, just dilute it in some Jojoba oil and make an oil-based perfume, or add it to a cream.
